Immigration On The Goldfields
Hannah Perryman
The discovery of gold was in 1951 and it brought many many people from all around the world as a chance to strike gold, set up shops and restaurants. People came from many country's, some including England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, America, China and Germany. People started coming due to choice rather then coming as convicts.
The Australian Immigration Policy
The British palament mainly controlled the 19th century immigration policy. The first immigration act that the colony of Australia passed was in 1855. the goal of the act was to control and lower the population of Chinese immigrants that were coming to Victoria. In this act they didn't allow the Chinese immigrants to sail into any of the docks in Victoria only leaving them with the simplest option to sail into South Australia and walk to Ballarat from there. It was a long very walk and on their way they confronted many aboriginal people who were not happy about unknown people entering their lands.
Although the law was in place the Chinese were very hard workers and it didn't stop them form making it to the goldfields.
The Eureka Stockade
The Eureka Stockade, also commonly known as the Eureka Rebellion is a key event in Australian history and the development in democracy and human rights.
It all started when James Scofie and Peter Martin were refused the entry into a bar. They didn't take this news lightly and it resulted in James Scofie being bashed to death. Any chargers toward the 'Eureka Hotel' were refused and the owner was let out without charge, many believe this was because he had connections toward the government. Many miners were not happy about no chargers being laid and this led to over 4,000 miners going up against the owner of the hotel in a protest, ending in the 'Eureka Hotel' being burnt down and many people being arrested.
After this a group of miners met at Bakery Hill and formed the Ballarat Reform Legue. In this league they faught for many things including:
- Imporved law and order, and over meant services.
- Parliomentary representation
- Abolition of license fees
Another meeting was held and Peter Lalor was elected to lead the Eureka Stockade. The miners built a stockade to prepare for the government coming to fight them. On December 3rd, 1854 the miners and troops head to the Eureka Stockade and the fight took place. It only lasted 20 minutes and the troops won easily. Many, many miners were killed this day. We remember The Euraka Stockade as an example of how people can get together and stand up for what they believed as a force against injustice.
